‘Kindness Starts With You’ – Celebrating World Kindness 2023
As we currently enjoy this festive Christmas season remembering the special Gift of Kindness that is celebrated the world over, we take some time to look back at another moment earlier last month, when hundreds of people joined our Ross | ReThink team and our non-profit affiliate, Band of Support, to celebrate our fourth annual observation of World Kindness Day.
Embracing the theme ’Kindness Starts With You‘, our week-long celebrations in early November embodied our commitment to instilling positive values that would inspire meaningful human connections, by spreading the spirit of kindness amongst the national community, providing support to the youth, small business owners and people from all walks of life.
We invited various individuals and organisations in their own simple ways, to join us in creating a ripple effect of kindness that could add a spark to the positive social change we all desire to see in Trinidad and Tobago. It truly begins with each of us owning that ‘first step of kindness’ today and every day!
On Wednesday 8 November, this message was shared with the pupils of Newtown Girls’ RC Primary School on Maraval Road, Port of Spain, where members of our Ross | ReThink team engaged the young students with storytelling, interactive learning and candid conversations, encouraging them to consciously make kindness an important part of their daily lives. The school expressed heartfelt gratitude for this engagement, which tangibly inspired these young minds.
This central message and spirit of ‘kindness by example’ was spread to a wider audience as our Ross | ReThink team, supported by volunteers and Band of Support’s ‘Captain Kindness’, hosted the World Kindness Day apex event on Friday 10 November at our offices in St. Clair.
Amidst some rainy weather, visitors were still showered with kindness, including free doubles from popular vendor Pepper Spot, generous servings of fried chicken from KFC, delectable desserts, entertaining games and giveaways by Subway, along with refreshments from Blue Waters and Xtra Foods Supermarket.
Taking centre stage was our Kindness Marketplace, where everyone experiencing these kind gestures had the opportunity to pay it forward by showing support and buying items from a cadre of young and upcoming artisan vendors. Selling a cornucopia of unique items were Off the Hook Dzigns; Denise Scott; Auxando Designs; Suzie the Crochet Addict; Atiba McKenzie; In the Light Designs; Roxy’s Designs; Darlene Ramdin; and Nailah’s Designs.
According to Sharlene Bramble, owner of Off The Hook Dzigns which creates unique handbags, pouches, canvas totes and neck collars, “This was my first introduction to World Kindness Day, and I had a really great time. The response to my products was unbelievable. This exposure has taken me one step closer to achieving my business goals. Ross has showed us that kindness is a great mechanism to lift each other up make our world better.”
We are truly grateful to all of our friends who collaborated with us, including Star Global Production Studios; Johnny Q, MC Stephan McConnie, 3ABNTT, DariUS Fashions, Signwave, Selected Faces, Label House, ZM Executive Transport, Blue Waters, Nestle, Prestige Holdings (KFC and Subway), and Xtra Foods Supermarket, and you, the public, for helping to successfully share the spirit Kindness, and hope that you will join us next year!
